We were able to spend our first day with Matt. Quite a few staff and interns and volunteers were here to watch and were excited about our first encounter. There is so much prayer that goes over each child here that it is a pretty big deal for everyone the day of the first meeting with a child's forever family.
It was somewhat surreal, as we were ushered into the preschool room where the kids were getting ready to sing. Matt was being pulled along in front of us and looking back. He started singing with his classmates and kept looking back to check us out. He is such a little animated singer! We got to play some playdough with him afterward and he was very energetic...I think a little excited about us being there. At some point, with all the comotion, Phillip his foster brother wheeled himself into a corner and one of the workers was there to console him. It made us very sad to see Phillip feeling so bad about the reality of Matt's family being here.
Later, after lunch, we were able to play with Matt in our room and then out in the court yard. We played for about 2 hours. That evening we were able to eat dinner in the dining hall with Matt's foster family and Phillip and Matt too. We were able to see how the two boys interact and how they eat as a family. We were also able to interact with the foster family and just see how much they love these boys. What a blessing to be able to have this opportunity to take all this in!! All in all, I think it went quite well for our first encounter with Matt. We had been told by the director that not all kids respond as openly as he did. Day 2 has a very full schedule...we will post more tomorrow we hope. Please continue to pray for sleep for us and comfort for Matt and his foster family as the big day of separation is approaching.
